Two schools in East Baton Rouge get Magnet School Award for Excellence

Saturday, February 23, 2013 - 7:00am

East Baton Rouge School District has been taking a lot of heat lately for their low performance but not the magnet schools. Two of the best magnet schools in the state are right here in Baton Rouge and now have awards to prove it.

Magnet Schools of America awarded the Dufrocq School and West Dale Heights Magnet with a national excellence award. So I took a trip down to Westdale heights to see why they are being nationally recognized.

"I would like to be an architectural engineer," says student, Caleb Bowers. "I want to be a doctor," says Olivia Herrington.

Caleb and Olivia have big dreams for their futures and they can thank their education at Westdale Heights for helping them set their goals so high.

"I think I can compare this school to middle school because it’s really advanced for an elementary school," says Bowers.

So advanced that they have been recognized nationally for what they do and how they do it.

"Here at Westdale Heights they have a number of programs that they highlight that they were awarded for and that's having the children participate in conservation programs, recycling efforts, raising money for wildlife,” says East Baton Rouge School District Representative, Susan Nelson. “They really have a holistic education picture here."

"Were learning about the stars and the planets like which planets are biggest in diameter," notes Bowers. "We go out in the garden and help plant plants and we also have a pond we take pond samples from the pond and we analyze them and that helps us learn about environmental issues.”

Students excel in all of the sciences and they take pride in reading as well.

“They have an exceptional accelerated reader program that they focus on here,” says Nelson.

And the parents and educators know these programs are successful because the kids are excelling and they love to learn.

"I like going to school because its all the excitement when you come to school you get to go to the science lab you get to be a meteorologist,” says student, Olivia Herrington.

Also in East Baton Rouge Parish, Baton Rouge High, Mckinley High, Sherwood Middle and Westdale Middle School Foreign Language Immersion each got a secondary honor from Magnet Schools of America.
