Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred on I-10 east of LA Hwy 22 in Ascension Parish just after midnight Sunday. The crash took the life of Sidrian R. Melancon, 24, of Port Sulphur.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Melancon was driving a 2003 Toyota Corolla westbound on I-10. It is believed that Melancon was traveling at a high rate of speed when for unknown reasons his vehicle ran off the roadway to the left. Melancon overcorrected, causing the Corolla to cross back over both westbound lanes of I-10. The Corolla exited the roadway to the right and struck a tree.

Melancon was not wearing a seatbelt and sustained fatal injuries from the crash. Driver impairment is unknown at this time; however, Troopers have submitted a toxicology sample from Melancon to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
