BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) — Neither Smokie Bourgeois nor John Delgado is holding back when talking about their opponent in the runoff election for the District 12 council seat. Delgado says Bourgeois has stood in the way of progress for too long and voters need to make a change.
"He's been a fairly consistent no vote. He has not really proffered any new ideas of his own. He just kind of shoots down other people's ideas,” says Delgado.
Bourgeois says all he's doing is looking out for the best interests of his constituents. This is something he believes Delgado wouldn't do if elected.
"He's got every special interest group in town behind him. All I've got is the homeowners in District 12. Let's see if they'll elect me," says Bourgeois.
Bourgeois says special interest groups have donated tens of thousands of dollars to Delgado's campaign, but Delgado says that's not going to change who he's looking out for.
"I'm going to listen to everyone in the district. I'm not just representing the people who contributed money to my campaign. I'll be representing the people who contributed money to his campaign. I'll be representing everyone in the district," says Delgado.
But these are words Bourgeois believes Delgado is simply saying to try and get elected.
"He'll tell you whatever you want to hear," states Bourgeois.
