Weather snarls early holiday travelers at BTR
BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) — Severe winter weather made for a rough start to a busy holiday travel season for some coming through the Baton Rouge Airport Monday.
Many at the Baton Rouge airport were greeted with cancelations and delays Monday as they tried to check in for their holiday flights home.
"Yeah so our flights got cancelled, and we were trying to figure out a way to get home and so we thought we were going to rent cars and just drive," said Sophia Quebe, a Dallas native who’s flight was canceled Sunday evening.
"It's better it happened today then Wednesday which will be the peak day, but from my understanding they've been able to protect them on other American flights and other carriers," explained Jim Caldwell of the Baton Rouge Airport.
Some, like Quebe, were able to find new flights home, but it is a harsh reminder of just how hectic the holiday season can be.
"I didn't know really what to expect and I can see it's starting to pick up a little bit in the airport I guess as people take these late afternoon flights," said Jennifer Breaux. Breaux and her son traveled to New York for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade.
Caldwell said just getting to the airport early and having a little patience will help get you through this bustling holiday season.
"The flights will be full. Most airports these days are going out pretty full year round as we are. Anticipate full flights. We recommend people get here 90 minutes prior, certainly at least an hour," said Caldwell.
Wednesday is expected to be the busiest travel day of the week.
