BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) — It’s going to be a cold one in Baton Rouge this weekend. However, a drop in temperatures can also bring potentially life-threatening situations.
"Every year, we have a number of instances that are caused by either flue leaks in fireplaces or space heaters or heating units," Eldon Ledoux, St. George Fire Department, told NBC33 News in a past interview.
Weekend temperatures for Baton Rouge and the surrounding areas are expected to drop to the low 30’s with the highs in the mid 50’s. Many will crank up the heat to stay warm and utilize space heaters to stay warm. One Baton Rouge family learned too late the dangers a space heater can bring.
On Thursday, Feb. 28, a blaze was sparked in a home on Erie Street by a space heater. Although the residents managed to escape unharmed, two dogs did not and perished in the flames. The home was destroyed rendering it uninhabitable.
"Unfortunately a lot of people get complacent they get the attitude it can never happen to me but it does," Curt Monte, Baton Rouge Fire Department, said. "We see so many times where people use an extension chord for a space heater and run it through an area rug. That's a big no-no. We don't recommend that you do that we have seen fires cued from that."
But space heaters are not the only dangers. A fireplace is another potentially dangerous heating element for your home.
"Every year, we have a number of instances that are caused by either flue leaks in fireplaces,” Ledoux noted.
"You want to make sure those embers stay in the fireplace where they are supposed to be," Monte added.
This cold snap may be a great time to snuggle up and enjoy cold temperatures before spring, it’s important to make sure you stay safe, too.
