From Home School to the Gridiron

By Chris Mycoskie

Florida quarterback Tim Tebow is the most famous home-schooled football player in history. None of the CHEF Patriots are Heisman hopefuls. They're just glad to have a chance to compete.

After winning back to back league championships, the student-athletes on the Christian Home Educators Fellowship team are playing an independent schedule this season.

It’s the only home school team in the state. With no outside funds, the players and their families pay for their own uniforms and transportation to and from games. The 24 young men are mainly from the Baton Rouge area, but some come from as far as Opelousas.

This has been a challenging schedule, with all four games on the road. The Patriots are winless so far, but you won’t see anyone moping around the practice field.

The Patriots play their only home game of the season Thursday against Acadiana Prep at COPAC Stadium in Plaquemine.
