Ke Alona Veal scored the winning basket with 3.9 seconds left to lead Acadiana Prep to a 44-42 win over Southern Lab and the Class 1A title at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association state championship tournament at Southeastern Louisiana University.
Veal, who was named the game's Outstanding Player, led Acadiana Prep with 17 points — 10 in the final quarter — as the Eagles rallied from a 36-26 deficit. It is the first title for the Eagles (24-2), who had to forfeit the Class 1A title in 2007 for using an ineligible player.
Southern Lab (31-3) was led by Jean Spears, who scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds, and Ty Stampley, who had 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Acadiana Prep trailed 40-32 with 4:05 left in the game when DeKendra Ledoux and Veal each sank 3-pointers to push the Eagles within two, 40-38. Veal sank two throws to tie the game, but the second shot was disallowed on a lane violation. She then stole the ball and drove for a layup and was fouled, sinking the shot and giving Acadiana Prep a 42-40 lead.
Spears tied the game for Southern Lab at 42-42 with 14.9 seconds left on a jump shot, but after a time out, Veal took an inbounds pass and drove the baseline to score the winning basket.
