Legendary coach Don Shows leaves impressive legacy behind
BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) — Louisiana high school football coaching legend Don Shows died Monday morning.
The long-time West Monroe head coach guided the Rebel program to eight state championships during his tenure. Shows battled several health issues in recent years including two strokes in 2013.
“I have a lot of respect for him and the job that he did. His name and West Monroe football are synonymous. When you thought of Don you thought of West Monroe and vice versa. I think that the whole state morns the loss of Don,” Catholic High School head coach Dale Weiner told NBC33 Monday. Shows’ Rebels beat Weiners’ Bears in all five of their games. Four of those games were in the state semifinals.
LSU head coach Les Miles released a statement Monday night on the passing of former coach Shows. “Don was a great man, coach and father and he will be missed tremendously. He did so many wonderful things that impacted the lives of the players he coached. He had great success on the football field, but it was the positive impact on the lives of the young men that he coached and the relationship that he had with his players that made him so special. He’s going to be missed,” Miles said in the statement.
