Odums, Jags hope to make most of transition

There’s a new boss on the bluff.

"This football team is moving forward. What is in the past, is in the past," Southern interim head coach Dawson Odums said Tuesday after he was introduced at the Jaguars weekly press luncheon.

"It’s not a tough transition; you are going from DC to head coach. I’m still a coach, and I believe I was prepared to be a head coach," he said.

Odums takes over a team that has stumbled out of the gates of the 2012 season and recently lost the man who brought many of the current players to the university.

"I've been telling this defense since I got here that I believe adversity is a part of life. Of course they were down. Coach Mitchell recruited a lot of these young men," Odums said. "We think we have a real good football team. We have a lot of talent. We have to get that talent to play together."

If that happens, Odums thinks the wins will come and perhaps the interim tag will be dropped from his title.

“Every head coach in the country is evaluated by wins and losses. I think if we do the right things, I’ll have the opportunity to talk to the athletic director and chancellor to continue to be the head coach at Southern University. But the only way to have that chance is to win," he said.

Southern will take on Jackson State Saturday at 4 p.m. in Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.
