Southern Softball Preview

By Emily Turner

There are a lot of new faces on the Southern Lady Jaguar softball squad.

"We have a group of young ladies, when we brought them in as recruits we saw that they were very talented,” head coach Nancy Marshall said. “We knew they could come into our program and make a big difference.”

The bulk of the new bunch being 10 freshmen.

"It’s a really big group, more than I expected,” freshman pitcher Brittney Gillenwater. “But we get along great and we work really well together."

And there’s no doubt that these newcomers will make an immediate impact on the program.

"We’ve got talent out of the woodworks,” sophomore pitcher Megan Hodges said. “We’ve got a talent freshman class. We’ve got hitters that can hit. (Of the) starting nine, seven might be freshman.”

"This year I can look for speed on the bench, I can look for hitting on the bench and for good defense on the bench,” Marshall said.

This year’s roster is teeming with talent and determination.

"Our number one goal is to make it to the College World Series," Marshall said.

A lofty goal, but this team is up for the challenge.

"We are much more dedicated this year, so we should do some big things," Hodges said.

Like win their first SWAC championship since 2003.
