McNeese State's softball team improved to 10-24 overall Tuesday with a 4-1, 3-2 doubleheader victory over Southern.
McNeese scored early in both games as the Cowgirls took a 2-0 lead in the opener on a two RBI single by Jenny Clay that scored Lindsey Langner and Holly Long. Southern got one of the runs back by scoring in the bottom of the inning for a 2-1 Cowgirl lead. McNeese scored single runs in the fourth and fifth to extend its lead to 4-1.
An RBI single by Tiffany Ritchie in the fourth plated Megan Beard for the third Cowgirl run then in the fifth Long scored the final run of the game. Long walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch before advancing to third on a ground out by Clay. A ground out by Michelle LaVoie scored Long.
LaVoie picked up the complete game victory to improve to 7-10 overall.
In the nightcap, Clay and LaVoie scored in the first inning on a Southern error for a 2-0 Cowgirl lead. McNeese took a 3-0 lead in the fifth when Langner scored on a fielder's choice. Southern cut into the Cowgirl lead with a run in the sixth for a 3-1 Cowgirl lead.
The Jaguars added another run in the bottom of the seventh for a 3-2 Cowgirl lead. McNeese ended the Jaquar hopes of tying the game when pitcher Bethany Stefinsky got Jasmine Tillman to fly out to left for the final out of the game.
Four Cowgirls collected one hit apiece with Beard and Ritchie collecting the only extra base hits with one triple apiece. Stefinsky picked up her first win of the season with the complete game victory while striking out 10 and giving up three hits.
