The Southern University Jaguars football team will begin spring practice on Tuesday, March 25th, thus beginning the 16th year of spring ball under Pete Richardson.
Southern will go through workouts on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday for the next three weeks, and will conclude spring workouts with two practices the week of April 15th. The Blue-Gold Spring Game is April 19th. All weekday practices are set from 3:00 pm until 5:30 pm. Saturday practices are currently set for 9:00-11:30 pm.
Southern finished the 2007 season with a 8-3 overall record, 6-3 in SWAC play.
SU will return three 2007 All-SWAC performers in '08, including Vince Lands, Josh Duran and Bryant Lee.
Lands, is a standout in the classroom, in the weight room and on the field, was an unofficial third team captain. He had 60 tackles, with 71/2 sacks and 22 tackles for loss, along with seven breakups, 11 quarterback hurries and one fumble recovery.
Duran led the SWAC with 40.3 yards per punt. He landed 18 of his 65 punts inside the opponent's 20-yard line.
Lee, in his first full year as a starter, led the SWAC in passing average, total offense and pass efficiency -- despite missing the Alcorn State game with an ankle injury and half of the Bayou Classic with a broken thumb.
Lee was 199-for-303 (65.7 percent) for 2,326 yards, 23 touchdowns and four interceptions (two of which first bounced off the intended receiver and a third after the thumb injury).
